We enjoy going to the races and one of our favourite places is Ripon. Such a pretty small racecourse in a beautiful part of North Yorkshire. On 6 May 2016 they put on a free race night, well you can’t say no to free!
We like to stay over in Ripon after we’ve been to the races and we usually go exploring at Fountains Abbey the day after so I set about finding a room. We’ve stayed at a few places in the town, usually in the centre near the market square which us hard for parking due to it being a market town. On this search I came across The Ship Inn, on Bondgate, not in the very centre and it had a car park. It also had very good reviews on Trip Advisor.
On arrival we saw a local pub, hotel guests enter to the right and have their own lounge in the pub. The chap who booked us in was lovely and told us he worked at The Old Deanery and was helping out at the pub. We went up a beautiful staircase to our room, we were in room 3. There are 5 rooms in total.
What a lovely room. Very welcoming with a hospitality tray that included a packet of shortbread. Good quality bedding and towels. Very clean. I only have two small comments, the curtains didn’t quite fit the windows and the tiles and grouting on the bathroom floor need attention, very sharp on bare feet and could cause an accident, also not very hygienic. A hairdryer would be a nice addition.
We sat for a few drinks in the bar and some friends we hadn’t been able to catch up with at the racetrack came to join us. Nice and quiet in the guest lounge.
Breakfast they say is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast was served in a room off the guest lounge. No fresh coffee I’m afraid but a choice of apple or orange juice, cereals and bread for toast. A full English which included sausage, bacon, fried egg, mushroom, Tomato, hash brown and baked beans. There was mention of black pudding on the sign in the bar but none appeared.
All comments are my own. I was not asked to make this review.
