The Three Tuns, Thirsk

image-6010-530-250JD Wetherspoon have pubs on most high streets now all of which are very popular giving us reasonable food and a good selection of real ales, wines and cocktails.  They then saw a space in the market about three years ago and started opening some hotels, they now have 26 around the country.

Following a recent trip to Ripon Races we wanted to stay overnight.  Accomodation in Ripon is always hard to book around race dates so we decided to book into The Three Tuns at Thirsk and experience our first Wetherspoons stay.

Dating from 1698, this grade II listed building sits on Thirsk’s attractive cobbled market place.  There are 13 ensuite bedrooms which all include tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer and TV.

There is free overnight parking in the market place and room for around seven vehicles at the back of the pub.

We were in room eight.  The lighting in the room was very dull and there was a rather large green emergency exit light on the ceiling which made the room an eerie colour through the night and defeated the object of black out linings on the curtains when the light was coming from inside the room.  We understand from the check out staff that this is the only room with this problem.

The bed was very comfy with nice quality quilt, pillows and bedding.  The hospitality tray was well filled and included biscuits and water as well as coffee and tea making ingredients.

The bathroom was light and bright with a very large bath and overhead shower.

The rooms were not very accessible due to the amount of stairs though a couple of the rooms were accessible using a wheelchair lift.

Free wifi was available in the bar area although there was hardly any phone signal in the bedroom and no virgin phone signal in the bar area.  The bar itself was very tastefully decorated as with Wetherspoon establishments.  Lots of little rooms all individually decorated.

Wetherspoons breakfasts are good value and there’s a big choice which now includes Eggs Benedict.

The room we stayed in cost £59 and the cost of breakfast was extra.

If all Wetherspoons hotel rooms are of this standard they are a good reasonable way of taking a short break.  We would stay at The Three Tuns again but we would request to be in a different room.
