Since the Curly One started his university course we have been visiting the north east quite a bit and we’ve some favourite places to visit.

Bridges Over The Tyne

There’s a lot of bridges to choose from, my favourites are the Millennium Bridge and the Swing Bridge.  I love the grandeur of the Tyne Bridge too.

Post Boxes

There are two Queen Victoria Penfold Post Boxes in Newcastle, one is an original on Osborne Avenue and the one in China Town is a replica one.  There are a couple of Queen Victoria anonymous post boxes that we’ve also noticed in Jesmond around the Osborne Road area.  The Edward 8th post box is between the Biscuit Factory and Osborne Road.  There is a very rare K4 mini post office box in Whitley Bay outside the Metro Station and a recent addition to the area is a gold Queen Elizabeth II post box in Jarrow for the Paralympic gold medallist Josef Craig.

Shopping

Newcastle is an excellent place for shopping.  The Metro Centre in Gateshead is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK and there’s also a thriving city centre with shopping areas such as Eldon Square, Eldon Gardens and of course Grainger Market.  Favourite shops include Fenwicks and their Christmas windows are fantastic.

The Baltic Mill

This is a wonderfully restored building on the Gateshead Quayside.   Lots of modern art and it housed the Turner Prize winner for 2012.  The viewing decks give a fantastic view up The Tyne.  Restaurants and a shop full of quirky items, art books and cards make this a good space to spend a couple of hours.
