How to make a crochet granny square.

With a little bit of practice this can quickly grow into a cushion or blanket or join smaller ones together with double crochet to make a bag or cushion.

Anything is possible once you master this little square!

Make a magic circle to start on your hook

Chain four

Slipstitch into the first stitch

Chain three, this becomes your first treble

IMAG1413

Two trebles into the centre hole

IMAG1414

Chain two

IMAG1415

Three trebles into the centre hole then two chain and continue this until you have four sets of trebles

IMAG1416

Single chain and then slipstitch into the top of your first three chain (first treble)

You then need to slipstitch across the first three stitches (the tops of the next three trebles) so that you can get to the corner and start the next round

Make a slipstitch into the corner

IMAG1419

Chain three then make two trebles into your first chain space

Chain two.   Make hree trebles into the same chain space creating your first corner

IMAG1422

Chain one.  Three trebles into the next chain space.  Chain two followed by three more trebles into the next chain space.  You always need two chain to make your corner.  Continue this round.

One chain on the sides and three trebles into each ‘side’ chain space.  Three trebles, two chains then another three trebles in the corner chain space.

Continue with this formula.  One chain between your three trebles on the sides and two chain between your two lots of three trebles in your corner chain spaces.

To continue in the same colour slipstitch across to the corner chain space once you’ve finished your round.

To add a colour join it in a corner chain space

Continue to watch your granny square grow

Hope this all makes sense!

Enjoy your crochet!

Having a little tutuorial with my friend, we realised she’d missed her second set of three trebles in two of her corners.  So we had to pull back her granny square and correct it before we could continue.
